Pet Gates

Pet gates are a handy way to keep your dog out of certain areas of the home while still making it easy for everyone else to move from room to room. They can stop curious puppies heading upstairs, keep dogs out of the kitchen or simply create a safe space when you need one.

Our range includes dog gates for standard doorways, hallways, stairs and wider openings. Choose from pressure-fit, wall-mounted and freestanding designs, as well as adjustable and foldable pet gates that can be moved or stored away when they’re not needed. We also have gates with cat doors, giving smaller pets the freedom to come and go while keeping your dog on the other side.

You’ll find metal, wooden and mesh options in a variety of sizes. A pressure-fit dog gate is a convenient choice when you’d rather not drill into the wall, while a wall-mounted gate offers a more permanent solution. Freestanding pet gates are ideal when you need something that can easily be repositioned around the home.

Helpful Buying Advice

Advice from the Petfuffle product team, based on our first-hand experience assembling, assessing and comparing the pet gates in our range.

What is the difference between pressure-fitted and wall-mounted pet gates?

Pressure-fitted gates use adjustable pressure against your walls without drilling, making them ideal for rental properties and internal doorways. Wall-mounted gates are fixed by drilling screws into your walls for better stability, making them the safest choice for staircases.

Are pressure-fitted pet gates safe for stairs?

We would only recommended pressure-fitted gates for the bottom of stairs. All of the gates we have ever installed at the top of our stairs have been securely installed wall-mounted gates for our peace of mind.

How high should my pet gate be?

We've put together the guide below to help you choose the right pet gate height for your dog. While your dog's size is a good starting point, it's just as important to consider their agility, athleticism and jumping ability. Some smaller breeds can easily clear a standard-height gate, while many larger, less active dogs are perfectly content behind one, so choosing the right height depends on both your dog's build and behaviour.

Pet Gate Height Best For Typical Shoulder Height Breeds Such As
45-60 cm Small dogs and puppies Up to 35 cm Chihuahua, Yorkshire Terrier, Maltese, Pomeranian, Toy Poodle, Shih Tzu
60-75 cm Small to medium dogs 25-50 cm Beagle, Cocker Spaniel, French Bulldog, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Miniature Schnauzer, Pug
75-90 cm Medium to large dogs 40-65 cm Labrador Retriever, Golden Retriever, Border Collie, English Springer Spaniel, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Australian Shepherd
90-105 cm Large or athletic breeds 55-75 cm German Shepherd, Dobermann, Boxer, Weimaraner, Standard Poodle, Rhodesian Ridgeback
105 cm+ Giant breeds and exceptional jumpers 65 cm+ Great Dane, Irish Wolfhound, Newfoundland, Leonberger, Bernese Mountain Dog, Belgian Malinois, Siberian Husky

Does my dog need a higher pet gate than I expect?

Some dogs are natural jumpers or climbers and benefit from a taller gate regardless of their size. Here's a few dog breeds we think, based on our experience, require a slightly higher pet gate than expected.

Breed Reason Recommended Minimum Gate Height
Border Collie Highly intelligent (making them great escape artists) and athletic 90 cm
Belgian Malinois Exceptional jumping ability 105 cm
Siberian Husky Escape artist and a bit of a climber 105 cm
Australian Shepherd Agile working breed 90 cm
Jack Russell Terrier Small, but it will surprise you how high they can jump 90 cm
Vizsla Lean and athletic 90 cm
Weimaraner Powerful jumper 90-105 cm
German Shepherd Strong and athletic which is why they are the first choice as Police dogs 90-105 cm
Standard Poodle Excellent agility 90 cm
English Springer Spaniel Energetic gundog that can easily jump lower barriers 90 cm
Working Cocker Spaniel Highly energetic and agile compared with show lines 90 cm
Whippet Fast, athletic and capable of surprisingly high jumps 90 cm
Greyhound Despite their calm nature, many can clear low gates when they want to 90 cm
Dalmatian Lean, athletic and capable of impressive jumps 90 cm
Dutch Shepherd These guys are athletic, intelligent and highly trainable 105 cm
Belgian Tervuren This breed is an agile working dog with strong jumping instincts 105 cm
