Helpful Buying Advice

Advice from the Petfuffle product team, based on our first-hand experience assembling, assessing and comparing the products in our range.

Are scratching barrels suitable for kittens as well as adult cats?

Yes. We've introduced scratching barrels to kittens as young as eight weeks old, and we've found that they quickly start exploring the different levels, scratching surfaces and hiding spaces. Kittens can enjoy climbing and exploring, while adult cats can benefit from the sturdy scratching surfaces and enclosed spaces for resting and hiding.

Can larger cats use a scratching barrel?

Yes. Over the years we've worked with many larger breeds, including Maine Coons and Norwegian Forest Cats, and stability is one of the first things we look for in a cat tree or scratching post. A scratching barrel should be heavy enough not to wobble when a large cat stretches against it, and wider platforms and larger hideaways also make a noticeable difference to a larger cat's comfort.

What's the difference between a scratching barrel, a scratching post and a cat tree?

This is one of the questions we get asked a lot. While all three provide somewhere for your cat to scratch, they're designed for different needs. A traditional scratching post focuses almost entirely on scratching. It's a good option if you're short on space or simply want to redirect scratching away from your furniture. A cat tree is a larger activity centre with multiple platforms, scratching posts, hideaways and climbing areas. They're ideal for energetic cats or multi-cat households but usually need more floor space. A scratching barrel offers the best of both worlds. It combines a durable scratching surface with enclosed hideaways and raised platforms for resting or watching the room. Here's a handy comparison table.

Feature Scratching Barrel Scratching Post Cat Tree
Primary purpose Scratching, hiding, climbing and resting Scratching Climbing, scratching, playing and resting
Scratching surface Large wraparound surface Single post Multiple posts
Hideaway space Enclosed Usually none Usually multiple spaces
Resting area Top platform Usually none Multiple platforms
Floor space required Medium Small Large
Best for Most cats and everyday use Small spaces or scratching only Active or multi-cat households
