We teamed up with Cat Behaviourist and author Lucy Hoile to provide expert product advice, helping you choose the right products for your cat with confidence.

I'd recommend giving your cat time to investigate a new cat tree rather than placing them on it yourself. Some cats will head straight for a new cat tree, but others will keep their distance until they've had a good sniff around it. Start by putting the tree somewhere your cat already likes to be. If they're always watching birds through the window, that's a good place to try. If they prefer being around people, keep it in a room you use regularly.

Try putting their favourite blanket or a couple of treats on one of the lower platforms. There's no need to tempt them all the way to the top straight away. Interactive play can help too. Drag a wand toy around the base or across a lower platform and let your cat chase it. Sometimes a short play session is all it takes to get them interested.

If the tree has sisal or jute scratching posts, placing it close to an area where your cat already likes to scratch may encourage them to investigate. Most importantly, make sure the cat tree feels stable when your cat climbs or jumps onto it. A tree that wobbles can make some cats reluctant to use it again.

Be patient, and don't worry if they ignore it for a week. Some cats take a while to decide that a new piece of furniture is worth climbing.

Large cat trees are an excellent choice for multi-cat households, provided the tree is appropriately sized and designed for the cats using it. I prefer designs with several resting places, platforms and scratching areas because they give each cat more choice over where they spend their time, and reduce competition.

A large multi-level cat tree can create additional vertical territory, allowing one cat to rest higher up while another uses a different platform or scratching post.
