Helpful Buying Advice

We teamed up with Cat Behaviourist and author Lucy Hoile to provide expert product advice, helping you choose the right products for your cat with confidence.

What height cat tree is best for my cat?

Cats naturally like to stretch out fully when they climb and scratch, so selecting a tree that's tall enough encourages healthy scratching and climbing behaviour, helps keep claws in good condition, and makes the product more enriching. As a general guide, use the table below to help you choose a height based on your cat's size:

Cat SizeRecommended Cat Tree Height
Small breeds (such as Singapura, Devon Rex, Cornish Rex)60-100cm
Medium breeds (such as British Shorthair, Siamese, Burmese)100-150cm
Large breeds (such as Maine Coon, Norwegian Forest Cat, Ragdoll)140-180cm or taller
If you are still unsure, measure your cat from the floor to the top of their front paws when fully stretched and choose a post or tree that exceeds that height.

Can multiple cats share one cat tree?

Cats in multi-cat households are generally happy to share cat trees, especially if they get along well. I would recommend providing enough scratching, climbing and resting spaces for every cat, my rule of thumb is to have multiple enrichment areas in different locations throughout the home, rather than relying on a single tree. This allows cats to choose an area to scratch and play without always having to be close to another cat. Ensuring there are enough scratching, playing and resting areas available helps reduce competition and minimises stress between cats.

Are vertical scratching surfaces better than horizontal scratching surfaces?

Neither can be considered better than the other. Cats usually have a preferred angle they like to scratch. So if you have a post but your cat scratches your carpet, I would recommend a horizontal scratcher so your cat can scratch down rather than up. This is particularly important for older or less mobile cats, as horizontal surfaces are generally easier for older cats to scratch.

Where is the best place to put my cat tree?

The cat tree needs to be located somewhere convenient for your cat, particularly somewhere they already spend time. I would recommend placing the tree in areas where they tend to spend a lot of time. Most cats like to stretch and scratch as soon as they wake up, so placing it near their bed is also a good idea.

Is a sisal rope surface better than corrugated cardboard or jute rope?

All three surfaces have their benefits. Sisal rope is durable and suitable for frequent scratchers, jute rope is softer, and perfect for moderate scratchers, while corrugated cardboard is inexpensive, and good for cats that prefer horizontal scratching. Take a look at the table below for a list of benefits for each.

Sisal Rope Benefits Corrugated Cardboard Benefits Jute Rope Benefits
Durable Inexpensive Natural fibre
Excellent grip Recyclable Softer feel
Long-lasting Appealing texture Environmentally friendly
Suitable for heavy scratchers Attractive appearance

How should I clean my cat tree?

I would recommend vacuuming your tree and only using warm, soapy water to remove stains and marks. Be careful not to clean it more than necessary as cat trees act as scent markers, allowing your cat to leave their scent and create a familiar, secure space. Cleaning them too often can remove these scent cues, making the tree feel less familiar and reducing its value as part of your cat's territory.
